The Streaky Bay District is located on the western coast of Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. The area was first inhabited by the Wirangu Aboriginal people for thousands of years before European settlers arrived in the early 19th century.

The first European to explore the Streaky Bay District was Matthew Flinders in 1802. He named the area after the Streaky Bay, a sheltered bay with striped sandstone cliffs that he encountered while sailing along the coast. However, it was not until the 1830s that whalers and sealers began to make use of Streaky Bay.

By the 1850s, the district had become an important center for fishing, with fishermen from Tasmania and New Zealand arriving to take advantage of the abundant marine life in the area. In 1864, an oyster farm was established in Streaky Bay, which proved to be very successful.

The Streaky Bay district played a role in World War II, with the Royal Australian Air Force building an airfield near the town in 1941. The airfield was used to train bomber crews, and later became a refueling stop for aircraft flying between Australia and the United Kingdom.

The rocks were named after a local farmer, James Murphy, who settled in the area in the 1860s and used the haystacks as a resting place for his livestock.
